On 19th January,  it is our Annual General Meeting (AGM) when we review the year and elect Committee  Members. Please come along and support your Committee.

After the AGM, Marie Gibson will talk about her (and Paul’s) project “Derby Pubs in WWI – CAMRA Project”.

On 16th February,  Tony Lintott will talk about the development and progress of “The Ice-House Project”.

On 26th January,  Derbyshire Archaeological Society are hosting a Talk by Paul Flintoff on “The Little Chester Flood Defences Excavations” at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Darley Lane at 7.30.  It is free to non-members.

Margaret has put together the Talks Programme for 2018, so pick up a paper copy. See the Blog “Events” page too.

Darley Hall Ice House Community Dig

We recently received Trent & Peak Archaeology’s Final Report in electronic form and we will be receiving 2 bound paper copies, one for the Archive and one for circulation. The electronic version is available as a link in this Blog’s “Ice House” section.

Our own DAHG Report and perspective on the planning and digging is yet to be issued.

In addition to Tony’s talk in February Laura Binns of  T&PA will speak at our April meeting, from the professional’s viewpoint.

We have put together a leaflet on the Dig to broadcast the outcome and to thank all who contributed and took part.  This will be issued to all participants, and you can pick up a copy when it is printed. There is a Blog link to the leaflet too.

All tasks within the T&PA programme are essentially completed and we will shortly pay the final invoice.

We intend to present our results to Heritage Lottery Funding and wind up the HLF programme by the end of February, exactly one year since we started the HLF process.

A Historical/Plant/Craft Fayre is planned by Marie, Maureen and Carol for May 5th 2018 to be held in the Village Hall.  Please contribute your ideas via email.

New Projects

Tony and Alan have put together a new Projects List, based on the original 2004 list and later additions; it shows those projects completed and those not yet tackled. You are encouraged to open this link Projects Spreadsheet and download the sheet.  If any of these projects appeal to you, or maybe you fancy tackling your own local history project, please get in touch so that we can offer support, and funding if it is necessary. Contact in the usual ways.

Pocket Wonders  —  Tony would like some feedback, if you have used the App. Please use the  “Contact” page of the blog or email,

Planning Applications   There are several new Planning Applications in Darley Abbey in progress which might affect local history :-  3 Church Lane; 1 North Avenue.  Do you have any historical or archaeological concerns about any of these ?  If so, we can make objections.

We still need someone to volunteer to run the Library and issue Books/Reports to Members.  Sheila W. has definitely resigned so no issues now, unless you volunteer !

Also we need new Committee Members – the Group does not run itself – it needs volunteers. Please make yourself known at the AGM, or at any other time. All help welcomed.

It’s Annual Subscriptions time. Check out the “Membership” page and make our Treasurer happy!
