NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2019 No. 92

NEXT  MEETINGS

On 15th November, John Hawkins will speak on “Stories behind Plants”.

Remember this meeting starts at 7.00pm.

Note  :- The “Images” magazine advert is wrong –  do not bring food for the Fuddle

Meetings in December & January are being disrupted by the need to renew the roof on the Village Hall.  The Hall is not available so we have had to re-arrange Speakers, Venues, Dates and Times.  The new arrangements are :-

On Wednesday 18th December in the Church Fellowship Room at 7.30pm.  Sheila & Roy’s “Guess the Object Quiz” followed by the Xmas Fuddle – Please bring food & drink for yourself & to share with others.

On Friday 16th January 2020 in the Church Fellowship Room at 7.30pm. DAHG AGM, followed by a talk by Alan Bradwell on “Some Mysteries of Duffield”.

Apologies for this disturbance, but it is all beyond our control.

In the last Newsletter, we said that the 7pm start time for Talks would continue into 2020.  This is now wrong  — Marie has contacted all our Speakers for 2020 and asked them to start at 7.30pm, and all have agreed.

So our Monthly Talks will start at 7.30pm. from January 2020.

Also note –

EVENTS

DVM / WHS Discovery Day on “Transport”

Well Done to everyone involved in the Transport Exhibition on Saturday October 26th 2019.

Despite very bad weather keeping casual visitors away, there were lots of interested visitors who thought that the Displays and facilities were wide-ranging and excellent.

Whether you Researched and made Boards, advertised the Event, Fetched and carried on the day, Sold our Goods and Booklets, Baked and Served refreshments or Answered the many queries from visitors, it all contributed to a successful day.  Sales and contributions came to about £100. Many Thanks.

Also on the day, Roy and Sheila showed CD’s about Darley and its American connections to about 20 visitors in St. Matthew’s Fellowship Room from 4 – 5pm.

Darley Legacy Makers

There will be a presentation of research findings at a meeting on 18th November at 2-4pm in St Matthew’s Church Fellowship Room.  DAHG members are invited to attend and take part in the project.

RESEARCH

Darley Booklets,

The Booklets project is moving fast, and very soon we will have newly 6 published booklets (Nos.2, 3, 4, 6, 7, & 15).  No. 1 has to be scanned to allow a reprint and will not be available until early next year

The latest booklet, #15, on “The Darley Mills Strike of 1917/18”, is currently being printed.

The Booklets are available now at Friday meetings and our events, cost £2.50. See Later in Tony’s section for further information.

Would like to tackle booklet on, ‘Modern Darley’ and ‘Ten Famous Darleians’ ? or perhaps some other title/area of your choice ? Tony can assist with the format / files and will organise the production and printing.

“Darley Memories” and “Darley Photos” Projects

The website continues to attract old Darleians, who are offering written memories and photos of Old Darley activities.  For these projects to really take off we need volunteers to manage the collation of documents and perhaps the scanning and storage of photos. This new material in our Archive could lead to its issue as a DAHG Report.  Any Volunteers ?

Darley Park Multi-user Path

The recent river floods covered sections of the tarmacced path and the boardwalk, but it is not clear yet whether any damage was done.

Watching Briefs & Surveys

Darley Slade Gatehouse, Burley Hill Pottery, Spinney Close Tunnels;  New Road Trenches;

Church Lane Culvert; Ice-house Display Area, Lavender Row Culvert, Darley Slade Gatehouse :-  no progress on these surveys & investigations this month.

PLANNING  APPLICATIONS

New Road 3 houses development   —   no news yet

Church Lane 1 house development  —   the owner will keep us informed, probably late this year though.

The Barn / Severn Trent Sewage Pumping Station  –  I did comment on this to DCC in March 2018.  This is very close to the Abbey stone foundations found during the Barn Excavations in 2006, but no Archaeological Watching Brief seems to have been imposed.

Tony Lintott adds …….

Further to Alan’s piece about the Booklets, you can now ‘buy on-line’, well almost. A website section previously titled, “Downloads” has been re-named, “Publications”. Here you will find a description of our booklets and a simple, formatted input area to allow ordering. There is a special offer too, so please take a look.

As Alan has said, please contact me if you need help when writing one of our booklets. We have a standard format so, if you want, you can start writing right now on any Darley-related subject and I / we can fit your text, photos and graphics into the required format quite easily when you’re ready for the booklet production stage. Please use Microsoft Word or similar programme for your creation(s).

We’d be happy to hear from you and happy to include your thoughts, stories and pictures in the Blog to make it even more interesting. Our Blog has now been accessed in  over30 countries around the world. We’ve burst through the 6000 page-hits barrier too. Not bad for a small group.

Don’t forget to use our DAHG email address, darleyabbeyhistoricalgroup@gmail.com to get in touch. All emails come to me and I distribute as appropriate.

Photo montage of the recent deluge which hit Darley over the weekend.

Do you have any pictures to share? Email us please.

Lots of water and Deans Field was inches away from becoming flooded.

The Car Park the other side was flooded, as was the Cricket Pitch and adjoining areas.
